In Resonant Traces, Jonathan Zorn and I explored the sonic characteristics of The Union Street Studio through the building's varied reverberant surface materials (plaster, brick, plastic, glass, concrete). On a Saturday in September, Jonathan Zorn, Sam Morrison (an invited composer) and I generated and performed scores connecting interior and exterior sonic aspects of the space such as: airplane traffic, a neighbor's bandsaw, bird song, contingencies between performers, sound textures, reflexes, and relational distances and durations. For the next month, Zorn and I took the audio and visual documentation from this day and created sympathetic pieces. Zorn made an edited soundtrack "Greatest Hits" that took every "attack" from our performances and cut each sound at the end of its decay. The resulting piece was a 10 minute flow of pulses edited in accordance with the acoustics of the building. For my part, I constructed 10 drawings throughout the building that were abstracted from our performed movements. Using thread, string, tape and pipe cleaners, the drawings hovered at a peripheral edge of visibility - reverberating off of existing formal elements of the building: corners, cavities between closet doors, office furniture, drooping electrical wires, light fixtures, Union Street Studio employees' work activities, etc. The drawings insinuated into different locations, introduced trace lines of bodies from performance, exercised peripheral awareness and challenged pedestrian patterns of movement.
Thank you to Carol Nhan and Union Street Studio for inviting our project into their workspace.
